Sgt. First Class E-7 Stephen Florentz was a helicopter medic in Vietnam. He was wounded during a battle in Asia and received a purple heart before returning home.
He later volunteered to serve a year in Operation: Desert Storm. He also helped with the Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. He cared for others on the battlefield; he cared for others in VA hospitals; and he cared enough for others to try to get them into homes.
Stephen had a passion for home-ownership, since he grew up in a tenement in Brooklyn and loved being able to buy his own home.
When he died last year, he left his entire fortune – more than $2 million – to Habitat for Humanity. It was the single largest gift ever received by that Oklahoma group. And with it, they were able to build houses for 25 families.
Stephen knew how important home-ownership was for him, so he wanted to make sure to share that with others.
