Talking in secretly-recorded interviews in 1991 for her book, “Diana: Her True Story” by Andrew Morton, the Princess of Wales spoke up about her connection with the Duchess of Cornwall.
In 2017, a new edition of the book named “Diana: Her True Story — In Her Own Words” was published, which included excerpts from the taped sessions.
She met her early on and was welcomed into the circle, but she posed a threat. She was a little girl, but she posed a danger, Diana said.
Diana was 19 years old when she got engaged to Prince Charles in 1981. Camilla was 33 years old and married to Andrew-Parker Bowles at the time. The prince was 32 years old.
They always spoke about Camilla, though, Diana continued. She once overheard him stating on the phone in his bath on his hand-held set that whatever happens, Prince Charles will always love Camilla. Diana later informed him that she had listened at the door and that they had a dirty argument.
The princess went on to narrate a lunch conversation she had with Camilla following her engagement to Prince Charles, during which Camilla questioned Diana if she intended to hunt with her new fiancé.
Camilla and Charles were known to love hunting together, so the query might have been her method of ensuring that she would not be substituted in that element of the prince’s life.
The lunch encounter was depicted in a season four episode of “The Crown,” albeit it did not include the exchange reported by Diana in the book.
Despite the detailed facts Diana provided Morton about Charles and Camilla’s connection, he said a libel lawyer told him he couldn’t write in the book, which was released in 1992, that they were having an affair.
Much to Diana’s chagrin, and despite strong proof, Morton wrote in the amended edition of the book, “I wasn’t at the moment able to state that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles were lovers.” “Instead, I had to make reference to a ‘secret relationship’ that had cast a lengthy shadow over the royal wedding.”
Charles acknowledged the affair in 1994, telling an interviewer that he had stayed loyal until the relationship with Diana got broken beyond repair, they both having tried.
