Last December, Stitch, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix, was just One day from being euthanized when Millie Sawyer came to her rescue.
Millie is a foster mother for Habitat for Paws. In her time doing that, she has saved more than 70 dogs from certain death.
Stitch was eventually placed with Kaitlyn Johnson, who trained the dog in the sport of fly ball. In fly ball, teams of dogs race against each other from a start/finish line, over a line of hurdles, to a box that releases a tennis ball to be caught when the dog presses the spring-loaded pad, then back to their handlers while carrying the ball. Flyball is run in teams of four dogs, as a relay.
After 2 months of training, Stitch could do his job on the team in under 4 and a half seconds. And for a novice dog, that’s a really fast time. And after Stitch started placing in competitions, he ran a 4.1…. which is REALLY fast.
