Hailey Bieber has been accused of ‘cultural appropriation’ after posting a TikTok video demonstrating a cosmetic look she calls ‘brownie glazed lips,’ which consists of brown lip liner and clear gloss.
The 25-year-old model was quickly attributed by media outlets and social media fans with initiating a new beauty craze, provoking outrage among individuals of color who pointed out that the beauty style has really been popular among black, brown, and Latina women since the 1990s.
Angry beauty fans flocked to social media to criticize the fashion celebrity for stealing the cosmetic technique and not acknowledging the inspiration behind it.
Hailey, who is wedded to Justin Bieber, popularized the ‘brownie glazed lips’ look after posting a TikTok video on August 22 in which she explained how to get the style while promoting her skincare product, Rhode Skin.
In the caption, she wrote, ‘The lip combination vibe I’m loving for autumn @rhode skin.’

The next day, she released another video showing the benefits of combining brown lip liner with a clear glossy lip treatment, with the caption: ‘Ready for all the fall stuff, especially brownie glazed lips.’
Her ‘glazed donut style’ and the main meaning behind her skin care product were clearly referenced in the name.

As fans of the model started to congratulate her for inventing the latest lip trend for the fall season, women of color started to express their dissatisfaction with the appearance being attributed to Hailey.
Many people pointed out that the usage of brown lip liner and clear gloss has long been liked by women with darker skin tones, thus giving it a new name or crediting the cosmetic trend to Hailey was incorrect.
‘”the Hailey Bieber brownie glazed lips trend” YOU MEAN THE SAME LIP COMBO THAT EVERY BROWN GIRL OF ALL VARIETIES OF BROWN HAVE BEEN DOING SINCE BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST,” one enraged Twitter user said.
‘I’m sobbing because she stole a lip combination that black and latino women have been wearing since the 90s and dubbed it “brownie glazed lips” to make it seem adorable lmao like if you’re going to attempt to make something trend, the least you could do is give credit to where you got the inspo,’ another wrote.
‘The fact that Hailey Bieber just wore brown lip liner and clear gloss and the white ladies are going crazy over it…honey, Latinas & Black women have been cool but y’all branded us ghetto for it… #woc,’ one beauty fan said.
‘”Hailey’s Brownie glazed lips” and it’s simply just brown liner + gloss that black and latino ladies have been doing for years,’ said another.
‘Not you b*****s stating Hailey Bieber’s “brownie glazed lips” are becoming a trend during Hispanic Heritage Month,’ said another.
Others pointed out that calling the method “brownie glazed lips” was troublesome since the film was meant to help sell Bieber’s goods, implying that she was benefitting in part from a trend started by women of color – a contentious subject in the beauty business.
‘Seeing Hailey Bieber be created for the “clean girl aesthetic” & “brownie glazed lips” is so exhausting like black and brown women BEEN THE BLUEPRINT but if a rich yt woman does anything it’s balls off the walls,’ one social media user commented.
‘White females on tiktok wearing hoop earrings and a slicked bun and calling it a “clean girl aesthetic” as if that style hasn’t been a mainstay for Black and Latina women???’ said another.
