Hear the Conversation That Led to Meghan Markle Hug: ‘We Appreciate You’

Meghan Markle got a warm welcome in the United Kingdom when she followed her husband, Prince Harry, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in the United Kingdom when the Queen’s health rapidly worsened and she died. While Prince Harry and Prince William raced to their grandmother’s side, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton remained on the sidelines but made an appearance outside Windsor Castle. Meghan’s contact with a small child, which finished with the two cuddling, seemed to embody the public’s sentiment for the Duchess of Sussex.

Well-wishers flocked outside Windsor Castle in England just days after the Queen’s death at the age of 96. Among them was 14-year-old Amelka Zak, who, like many of others, had formed a line on each side of the road. Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Prince Harry greeted and thanked the visitors for coming to pay their respects to the Queen. Isabelle Charters (@IzzyChar97) captured their lovely interaction in a TikTok video. Meghan approached Amelka, who was overcome with emotion. “Oh my gosh, hello!” Meghan inquired, and she answered, “Amelka.” Meghan added, “Ah, beautiful. Thank you for coming. It means a great deal to the family. We appreciate that.” Meghan then inquires as to how long she has been there. “Like, two hours,” Amelka estimated. “Oh goodness,” Meghan responds. “Well, I hope you’ll be able to return home soon; I appreciate your presence.”

Amelka then begs Meghan for a hug, to which she responds, “Of course,” and the two exchange a deep hug. Charters, who recorded the footage, posted it online with the caption, “Meeting Meghan, what a beautiful soul. We love and support you.” CNN interviewed the teenager and she explained that she just wanted to show Meghan Markle that she was welcome, particularly given some of the negative media attention.

Amelka recalled that they were simply waiting for her to appear, and she came close to her and asked her name and how her day was, and how long she had been waiting.  And Amelka asked if she could hug her, and she hugged her back; it was an incredible experience, and she is still shaking still.

Some British media sources have been critical of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle since they resigned from their positions as senior members of the royal family and relocated to California. Their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey sparked outrage as she said she was subjected to prejudice by a member of the royal family. Amelka made it obvious that she was ready to inform them that they were always welcome in the United Kingdom. She also mentioned how pleasant it was to see the two brothers and their partners together after hearing about their feud. Amelka expressed that everything was lovely to see William, Kate, Megan, and Harry together and it was fine, but she simply intended to show her that she’s welcomed here. And really desired to embrace her after all that’s occurred, Amelka explained when asked why she reached out to Meghan when she came along. As she looked up to her in some ways, and it just felt like the right thing to do.

Security had not anticipated the couples to wander around and greet the people, according to sources. A royal insider said that Prince William believed the walkabout to meet the crowds was an essential demonstration of solidarity at an extraordinarily difficult moment for the family.  It’s such a remarkable historical event, as well as a highly personal one for the family, that one expects and believes that all members of the family will unite and support the King, and perhaps some of those scars might be mended in the process, the insider continued.
