Novelist Salman Rushdie, who has gotten death threats for years due to his writing, was recently assaulted and maybe slashed on stage in New York.
The author, who was formerly married to “Top Chef” personality Padma Lakshmi, was scheduled to speak at the Chautauqua Institution in New York on Friday. According to reports, Rushdie was on stage when somebody leapt up and attacked him many times. According to a representative for the New York State Police, Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and sustained a slight head injury. His condition is unknown at this time.
His present status is unclear, however the assailant has apparently been apprehended.
Rushdie’s work, “The Satanic Verses,” created a lot of controversy in the 1980s… with the book being prohibited from Iran for being immoral since it made fun of the Prophet Muhammad and Islamic culture in general.
Due to what he wrote, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, called on Muslims to assassinate the Indian-born writer and his publishers in 1989.
