There are certain performances that will leave you with chills. When famous vocalists Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson performed a Broadway duet together, the outcome was nothing short of amazing.
It all happened one evening during Josh Groban’s Stages Live concert, which was broadcast as a PBS special. The set selection was filled with iconic musical theater songs, including a Phantom of the Opera classic.
Josh Groban has always loved Broadway. Then came the day when he realized his ambition by releasing the CD Stages, which included a range of musical classics from the big stage.
He explains on his website that he has always loved theater and musical theater. He has wanted to perform these songs since he was in high school.
Josh sings “All I Ask of You” from The Phantom of the Opera on his CD. He sought a unique diva to be his Christine for it. Kelly Clarkson was his pick, and she joined him for the duet.
When the Stages Live event was announced, fans were in for a great surprise, as they would be able to watch their favorite Josh covers come to life. He stated to the crowd throughout the performance that he understood that this duet had to be recorded in a very, very special way when they were making this record, and he was going to record this song. And it has to be recorded with a unique vocalist.
He was, of course, alluding to Kelly. She strolled out into the limelight moments later, wearing a stunning black gown. She, too, loves Broadway, and it just so happens that The Phantom of the Opera was the first musical she ever saw.
Raoul and Christine Daaé perform “All I Ask of You” as a duet. Kelly tells the audience she’s always intended to play Christine. She finally got her opportunity because of Josh.
Josh eventually lets loose with his vocals after a little orchestral interlude. He sings:
“No more talk of darkness- Forget these wide-eyed fears. I’m here, nothing can harm you. My words will warm and calm you…”
It just takes a few lines for Josh to show what an outstanding vocalist he is, and why he has won so many hearts. Faces in the audience can be seen lighting up as they listen to him play.
Then Kelly takes over, her voice filling the room with goosebumps. It swiftly becomes clear that she, too, has a flair for musical theater singing.
The duo’s connection shows through as they alternately perform “All I Ask of You.” When Josh and Kelly blend their voices, they achieve a whole new level of beauty. It’s the kind of music that takes your breath away.
Their Broadway duet has captivated internet surfers. The YouTube video alone has received almost five million views.
Josh told Billboard about performing “All I Ask of You” with Kelly on his album that it’s always the best thing when one can take a classic song that everyone knows and add a nice surprise to it. One can offer people something they didn’t anticipate. So he believes Kelly, and he performing this song is one of them.
