William Bates Jr. worried a Missouri mom when he wandered into Kemp Playground in Kansas City, Missouri, without any children of his own. Things would take a horrific turn for Christa Moore when she was there with her children and Bates approached the woman’s youngster, pulling off the child’s diaper, and the terror that followed drove the mom fleeing.
Out for a day of pleasure, the mom did what many others do and sought a quiet location nearby to relax and watch her kids play on the playground. However, she wouldn’t be able to rest and unwind for long. She’d be sprinting to rescue her kid from 24-year-old William Bates Jr. soon after he arrived at the playground.
It didn’t take long for Christa Moore to get uneasy when she saw a suspicious Bates “eyeballing” her children. Nothing could have prepared the frightened mother for what she would soon experience, as horror unfurled right before her eyes, and it was nothing short of any mom’s worst fear.
Bates approached her 2-year-old daughter on a swing at Kemp Playground at Ninth and Harrison streets, taking her from the swing before grabbing the youngster by the hips and pulling her diaper down, the mother told police. Bates then removed his shirt, pulled his trousers down, and pushed against Moore’s daughter.
The outraged mom sprang into action, wanting to rescue her kid, after being shocked, appalled, disgusted, and angered by what she saw. Christa collapsed on the ground as she sped off at Bates’ full pace. As the mom sprang upon him, she pummeled the attempted child rapist with her fists and delivered as many hits to the head as she could while he lay on the ground.
Sadly, Bates was able to escape the mother’s hold, prompting the coward to leave, but this mom bear was not willing to give up on bringing the beast who harmed her young to justice. She wasn’t going to let Bates get away and endanger another kid, and neither was family friend Devan Barnes, who saw the incident and chased the guy.
Devan Barnes heroically followed the guy into a fenced-in parking area and detained him there until law enforcement came and took control, while Christa Moore fled with her kids to a nearby homeless help organization to contact the police. Due to Christa and Devan’s bravery, authorities were able to apprehend the child predator before he could hurt anybody else.
According to the arrest report, William Bates Jr., who was discovered carrying marijuana and an unidentified white vile of fluid with a chemical odor, was held on a $150,000 cash bond and officially charged with felony first-degree attempted sodomy and attempted statutory sodomy with a person under the age of 12.
Bates claims he has no recollection of what happened in the park and believes he was drugged. He informed the cops that he was offered a cigarette near the park and had no recollection of the encounter until he awoke within the fenced-in area as he was being detained.
Yet, there are a few individuals who will never forget what occurred at the park that day, including Christa Moore’s frightened kid and Devan Barns, the friend who didn’t let Bates escape.
Christa said she does not understand how somebody could harm a kid in that way. He approached her daughter, and the next thing she knew, he was pulling her trousers and ripping them down, Moore said. When he did it, he ripped her diaper. Moore stated that in the moment she rushed him, she just wanted to hurt him.
If the police didn’t come up, Devan said, adding that he acted because it was simply the proper thing to do. Companies surrounding the park expressed their hope that the tragedy would result in increased safety measures in the region. The first step is to get monsters like William Bates off the streets, which became a reality due to the courage of Christa Moore and Devan Barnes during what had to be a frightening circumstance.
