He appeared in court for the first time last Friday, accused with first-degree murder and armed robbery. Haywood is from Holly Springs but has spent the last few months in the Surf City area, about two and a half hours away. Haywood allegedly removed his sweatpants and bandana after the alleged assault and left them in the store, per the search warrants.

Before fleeing, he allegedly stashed cash and things in his backpack.

Mayor Doug Medlin of Surf City is stunned by the occurrence. He stated, they simply can not comprehend something like this. They ‘ve had individuals walk in and take goods and such, but nothing like a robbery, especially when somebody is killed as a result, so that’s what really shocks the area.

Ben David, the District Attorney for Pender County, stated, he realize this is a shocking issue in the community and understands  this is something that a large number of individuals have focused on, and they are definitely giving it a top importance in the criminal justice system.

The office of Judge Russell Davis is requesting the death sentence for the 22-year-old. He stated it was the state’s desire that he be appointed to the Capital Defender’s Office since this might be a death sentence case. They also requested that it be kept without a bail.

Haywood is scheduled to appear in court again on September 14.
