After physicians laid her young boy on her chest, a woman allegedly awoke from a 23-day coma.
Amanda da Silva, 28, is a mother of three who has had epilepsy since she was a youngster. Amanda had a severe seizure and was sent to the hospital when she was 37 weeks pregnant with her youngest kid. Amanda’s and her baby’s life were jeopardised as a result of the seizure.
Doctors anaesthetized Amanda before performing an emergency C-section to deliver her son, Victor. However, due to additional problems, Amanda was placed in a medically induced coma.
She was unable to move or talk for the following 23 days.
The examinations revealed cerebral activity, said gynaecologist Carlos Alencar. However, the regions of activity were not reacting to anything in particular, not even the voices of family. She made no movement with her arms, legs, or body.
Amanda remained motionless until Fabola Sá, a nurse, wanted to try something new. She placed Victor, the baby, on Amanda’s chest. As soon as Amanda touched the baby’s skin on hers, tears streamed down her cheeks, Fabola recalled. It was a love cry.
Amanda and Victor went home together three weeks after holding her kid for the first time.
When she became pregnant with her youngest kid, doctors recommended her to discontinue one of her prescriptions since it presented a risk to her baby.
As a result, Amanda had more seizures than normal, including an intense seizure that brought her to the hospital at 37 weeks pregnant.
Doctors were concerned when Amanda arrived at Ceara’s Assis Chateubriand Maternity Hospital that the seizure would claim both her and her baby’s lives. They anaesthetized her before performing a C-section on her son.
Victor, the newborn, weighed only 4.6 pounds. He was transferred to the intensive care unit.
Amanda, meantime, was placed in a medically induced coma. She eventually opened her eyes, but she was unable to talk or move her body.
They started eliminating the sedatives that kept her unconscious little over a week after she was taken to the hospital, obstetrician Carlos Alencar explained. However, she did not respond as they anticipated.
Amanda was in a coma for the following 23 days.
The medical team was at a loss for ideas until one of the nurses, Fabola Sá, had a light bulb moment. She proposed that Victor be placed on Amanda’s chest, bringing mother and baby together for the first time.
Amanda answered promptly, much to everyone’s surprise. Her heart rate increased, tears flowed down her cheeks, and she sobbed.
It was a love cry, Fabola explained. But it was also a cry that said, ‘I’m still here, I’m living, I want to live.'”
Her reaction was unexplainable after 23 days in a coma. They never imagined such a speedy turnaround, and everybody on the medical team sobbed with joy and relief, Fabola added.
Amanda doesn’t recollect giving birth, but she does recall the first time she awoke.
The first thing she remembers is holding Victor in her arms, seeing his small head, and feeling his exquisite perfume, she recalled. It was an extraordinary circumstance, but it was also perplexing. She asked her father whether the child was hers. When she placed her palm on her stomach, she knew she was no longer pregnant.
Doctors are unsure why Victor’s touch had such an immediate impact on Amanda.
They don’t have a scientific explanation for what happened, but it’s clear that they should never overlook the importance of mother-child skin-to-skin contact, Fabola said.
Amanda and Victor went home together about three weeks after she first held her baby.
