After acting in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in the mid-1960s, the iconic actor was pushed into the limelight.
Many people will recognize him as Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard, the NCIS chief medical examiner.
In a statement on behalf of the family, David’s son Peter conveyed the devastating news.
It said that he was the kindest, coolest, most patient, and most loving father. He always put his family first. He enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with his grandkids, and he had a special affinity with each of them.
At family gatherings, he and his youngest grandson, Whit, 9, could often be found in the corner of a room having deep philosophical discussions.
He was a true Renaissance man, intrigued by science and culture and turning his passions into knowledge.
For instance, based on his decades-long studies for his role on NCIS, he was capable of conducting a symphony orchestra and (if necessary) performing an autopsy.
When he got back to their apartment from the hospital, he asked his mother if she was all right before she went to bed. ‘Yes,’ she said simply. But he wishes they could have grown old together. She is 79, and his father is 90.
The honesty in that emotion shows how vibrant their wonderful relationship and daily lives were, and that somehow, even at 90, his dad never grew old.
The 90-year-old died of natural causes at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
NCIS executive producers Steven D. Binder and David North said in a statement that for over twenty years, David McCallum charmed audiences around the world by playing the wise, quirky, and sometimes enigmatic Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard. But, as much as his fans adored him, those who worked with David adored him even more. He was a scholar and a gentleman, always cordial and professional, and never missed a joke. It was an honor to work with him from the start, and he never let us down. He was, simply put, a legend. He was also a member of the family and will be greatly missed.
