So I did a thing… hopped on a plane yesterday for a 24 hr trip to surprise my 12 yo nephew who was playing for a little league state championship. They won their quarterfinal game Tuesday night and I really felt in my gut they had a chance to keep rolling and win it all. So, I rolled the dice, booked a last minute flight and headed to Charleston in time for their 8 pm quarterfinal game last night.
My nephew was so surprised (as were my 5 other younger nieces and nephews) I actually called him from the airport in CLE to wish him luck and LIED about not being able to come!
Then I bawled like a baby today when they WON IT ALL! South Carolina state champs in his division. He was a beast too, went 8-14 in the tourney and pitched lights out as well.
After I hugged him, congratulated him, and yelled at him for making me cry, he said, “Aunt Shelby, are you coming to Mississippi?” Cuz that’s where the national Dixie Youth Baseball World Series is next month. Oh my heart…
These are the moments that life is all about. Being there and soaking up the once in a life timers… I’ll treasure this forever. And I even got to sneak in a sleepover with my 6 yo niece at the hotel. My heart is full.
