So my brother, he’s had a learning disability all his life and had selective mutism as a young child, so school has always been a struggle for him, to the point his 1st grade teacher said to my parents he’d have to repeat the grade if he planned on staying at our neighborhood school.
My brother was lucky enough to be accepted to a school for kids with special needs where he was able to receive the support he needed.
4 and a half years ago my brother announced he wanted to graduate high school on time, and go to our districts main steam school with his friends. (I’d like to take a moment and say that where we are from, “on time” means 4 years. 4 years is average and each person should go at their own pace).
High school was a huge struggle for him. Lots of tears, summer school and late nights. But with the support of our parents, his friends and his dedicated teachers he was able to graduate high school in June 2019 (we are in Canada), along with the rest of his friends.
I’m sitting on the couch right now at home listening to my brother present his very first college grade results to my mom and just wanted to tell everyone how proud I am of my brother for getting where he is today.
(Also, thank you to all the teachers, educators, and early childhood educators out there for your constant support of kids like my brother)
