When they were walking home from a bus stop in Texas this week, lightning struck them, killing the father and critically injuring the boy.
Matthew Boggs, 34, of Valley Mills, was going down his driveway with his two boys, Grayson and Elijah, on Monday evening ”when lightning came out of the sky without warning,” according to a GoFundMe account set up by a family friend.
According to the fundraiser page and Matthew’s obituary, Grayson, 6, was clutching his father’s hand when the lightning bolt hit.
According to Matthew’s mother, Angela Boggs, in their dying moments together, Matthew told his son, “I love you, buddy.”
“He just got done telling Grayson,” she said. “That’s when the lightning struck.”
According to a post released on the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page by Sheriff Trace Hendricks, the two victims “were not responsive” when first responders arrived.
The 6-year-old son was discovered “unresponsive, but breathing” and was sent to a nearby hospital, while his dad was confirmed dead on the spot.
According to the GoFundMe, Grayson is currently “fighting for his life” in the Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple.
According to Stephanie Burris, a cousin who organized the fundraising campaign, the boy suffered many seizures following the event and was put on a ventilator to help him breathe. Grayson’s frontal lobe and optic nerve were damaged in an MRI on Thursday.
”When asked whether Grayson would wake up today, the doctor said, ‘I don’t know.’ “She said we have to wait until we can reduce the sedating medications he is on to see if he will wake up,” a family member wrote in the update on Thursday.
“At this time, there are a lot of unknowns about how Grayson will recover,” the organizer added. “However, the family remains hopeful that God is working to heal our sweet boy.”
Matthew was recalled as a dedicated member of the Bosque County Cowboy Church who cherished watching wrestling and being with his family, according to his obituary.
Matthew discovered great joy in music and enjoyed singing any chance he got; however, they can rest assured that Matthew is now singing with the angels, the obituary said.
The funeral will be held at the Bosque County Cowboy Church on Saturday. A memorial ceremony will be conducted in Indianapolis, where he was born, at a later date.
