Vegan mom starved toddler to death with diet of raw vegetables, fruit

A vegan mom from Florida was convicted of killing her 18-month-old son after only feeding him raw fruits and vegetables.

Sheila O’Leary, 39, faces life in prison after a judge sentenced her Wednesday of killing and a slew of child abuse counts in the death of her baby, Ezra O’Leary.

Her son weighed only 17 pounds — seven pounds less than the norm when his parents found he had stopped breathing.

O’Leary and her husband, Ryan O’Leary, told authorities that Ezra ate a vegan diet but was also breastfed.

They claimed the boy hadn’t eaten in about a week and was having difficulty sleeping.

An autopsy revealed that the tiny kid died as a result of nutritional issues.

Prosecutors charged the mom with neglecting to obtain sufficient medical care for her kid after she became aware of his illness.

During closing remarks, Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller stated, “She decided to dismiss his cries.”

“A scale wasn’t required to see his bones. She didn’t require a scale to hear his scream.”

Prosecutors noted that before Ezra died, the parents had been ignoring their three other kids, all of whom were under the age of 11.

Miller explained that they’re here as their kids were dying of hunger, especially the smallest.

O’Leary’s spouse will stand trial on the same accusations.
