Rory Staunton was born in Queens, New York in 1999. He was the debate team captain and a proponent of nondiscrimination.
Rory was 12 years old when he sustained a scratch on his arm during a school basketball game. His fever rose throughout the day, and he became increasingly feeble. His parents took him to his physician, who failed to notice the indications of sepsis, one of the world’s most lethal illnesses. Nevertheless, it is an infection that many individuals are not aware of.
Rory’s doctor referred him to the emergency department, where the medical personnel once again overlooked multiple signs of sepsis. They checked his vital signs and examined his blood tests, oblivious to the fact that his white blood cell count was quite high.
Rory was taken home, where his condition deteriorated. His parents hurried him back to the hospital when his nose became black and his toes grew frigid, but it was too late.
On April 1, 2012, Rory passed away. The term “sepsis” was never used during his treatment, according to reports.
Thus started the Staunton family’s painstaking work to educate parents about the generally treatable but potentially fatal condition — and Rory’s heartbreaking death sparked a statewide movement.
