Two of the most beautiful stars on the silver screen are married to each other. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were a lovely, loving couple who were married for five decades until Paul died.
The two actors met on the set of “Picnic” in the 1950s, when they began their growing acting careers. Newman was married at the time, and they parted ways to pursue major parts in Hollywood films.
They collaborated again in 1958’s “The Long, Hot Summer,” and by the conclusion of production, Newman’s divorce from his first wife had been formalized. He whisked Woodward away to Las Vegas for their wedding.
The decades that followed were filled with love and career accomplishment. They had three kids and settled in Connecticut as a loving family. Among other things, Paul Newman went on to play the lead in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting.” Joanne, his wife, also received an Oscar for best actress for her performance in “The Three Faces of Eve.”
Paul Newman also founded “Newman’s Own,” an organic food brand, and continued with this and other humanitarian endeavors until his death from lung cancer in 2008. He and Joanne celebrated their golden wedding anniversary of 50 years of marriage and joy the same year.
Newman is often reported as stating, he have steak at home; why go out for hamburger? alluding to his wife Joanne being the “steak.” Laughter, on the other hand, was the key to a long-lasting marriage. She said that although beauty fades, a guy who makes her laugh every day is something to cherish.
Others have observed their explosive chemistry, and one writer who was in their company at a dinner party in the 1970s was completely taken in.
