Tina Turner died on May 24, 2023, after a “long illness,” her spokesperson stated. But first, she lived.
The iconic singer’s electrifying concerts have served as a model for those who have followed in her footsteps. She was noted for her one-of-a-kind voice and charm, as well as her perseverance and comeback story, which included escaping an abusive relationship and restarting her career in her forties.
Turner, then 73, sat down with her friend Oprah Winfrey in 2013 for a lengthy talk about her history, career, and future—including her death.
Turner tackled the idea of moving out of life with interest while speaking with Winfrey.
She remarked that even when it’s time to leave and go to another planet, she is thrilled as she is eager to learn what it’s about. Nobody can tell since no one has returned. She is not looking forward to dying, but she won’t be sorry when the time comes. She finished what she came here to accomplish. Now is the time to enjoy yourself. She has wonderful buddies and now has a wonderful guy in her life. She has a wonderful husband, and is content.
Turner has been dealing with a number of health concerns since 2013, as detailed in her 2018 book, “Tina Turner: My Love Story.” Stroke, colon cancer, and renal failure were among them. She also suffered from vertigo.
According to her book, an extract from which was published in People, her second husband, Erwin Bach, gave her a kidney in 2017, saving her life.
She pondered if anyone would think that Erwin’s living donation was transactional in some way, she wrote in her book. Incredibly, despite how long they’d been together, individuals still wanted to believe Erwin married her for her money and fame.
Turner married Bach 27 years after they first met, in 2013. In an interview in 2021, she described it as one of the best times of her life.
Turner spoke openly about her condition in her biography after her transplant was successful.
She understands that her medical adventure is far from over, as she said in her autobiography, “Tina Turner: My Love Story.” But she is still here —they’re still here, closer than they ever imagined, she concluded. Looking back, she can see why her karma was the way it was. The good comes from the evil. Joy sprung through suffering. And she has never been happier than she is right now.
Her tale, however, was not without its rough times. Turner was very candid about her mental health issues. In “My Love Story,” she writes of attempting suicide after an abusive relationship with Ike Turner.
She chose death, and she chose it honestly, she said in her autobiography. When she awoke, she was dissatisfied. But she never tried it again since she came to a significant realization that altered the trajectory of her life. She emerged from the darkness, certain that she was supposed to live. She came for a reason.
Turner considered her 2021 documentary, “Tina,” to be her goodbye. Bach said in the documentary that it was her way of saying farewell, along with her musical.
“She said I’m going to America, I’m going to say goodbye to my American fans, and I’m going to wrap it up. I think this documentary and this play — this is it. This is a closure,” he said.
