Story by Bambi Loveday
When I was a little girl, I went to a small country church. Every Sunday, when they dismissed everyone to go to their Sunday School class, all the kids would walk by this man sitting on the front row. And as we walked by we got to choose Juicy Fruit gum or Big Red. I called him the chewing gum man. He always had gum for the kids.
And over 30 years later, I remember that.
We make excuses that we can’t help for lack of time, money, abilities, and resources. But the truth is, it doesn’t take much to impact the lives of others. It can be in something as small as a piece of gum.
He gave us the gum because he was kind. He did it as an act of love. One small gesture of love towards others can stay with them their whole lives.
When I think about people who have impacted my life, it’s never those who have spent a lot of money. It’s often those who are always kind to me; always loving; and always humble. Humility doesn’t cost anything, but it is a rare thing to find.
Wherever you are today, look for little ways to make a difference. Hold a door. Give someone a compliment. Help a struggling mom at the store. Send a text. Maybe even offer someone a piece of gum!
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
