Officer Seara Burton died five weeks after being wounded during a traffic stop, the Richmond Police Department confirmed late Sunday night.
According to a department statement, the 28-year-old officer died around 9:59 p.m. She was encircled by her loved ones.
It is with great regret that they report the death of Officer Seara Burton #140/K9-2 at Reid Health at 9:59 p.m. tonight, accompanied by her family. She died as a result of the injuries she sustained in a criminal act on August 10th, 2022.
Burton was shot in the head on August 10 while responding to a traffic stop in Richmond, Indiana, with her K9 partner, Brev.
Brev informed her of the likely presence of drugs after an open-air smell. The driver began firing on Burton as other cops were chatting with him.
The four-year veteran was hit in the head with a bullet.
She was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital and underwent surgery.
Although Richmond Police Chief Michael Britt first stated that Burton was demonstrating indications of responsiveness, doctors concluded on August 31 that she would not be capable of recovering from her wounds.
It was stated that she will be taken off life support the next day.
On September 1st, she was covered in an American flag and brought around the hospital corridors by Brev and RPD honor guard members on an honor walk.
Burton started breathing on her own while being prepared for possible organ donation. On September 3, she was transferred to a hospice unit, where she fought for her life.
Burton’s health was updated practically everyday by the police department, albeit it rarely altered.
No changes to report in Seara's condition. Keep Seara and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Have a safe weekend!
