Bush was sent to the hospital and died soon before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies interrogated Bush’s mom, whose narrative fit both the evidence at the scene and Bush’s wounds.

The investigation is ongoing, but authorities believe the shooting was unintentional. According to the sheriff’s office, the gun was unprotected, which is how the toddler gained access to it.

On Thursday, a forensic autopsy will be performed.
