The Coast Guard has called off its search for a recent Louisiana high school graduate who went overboard while on a Bahamas trip.
Cameron Robbins, 18, graduated from University Laboratory School (U-High) in Baton Rouge on May 21 and joined hundreds of other students on a celebration boat cruise.
He allegedly leapt overboard on a dare on Wednesday night. According to reports from that night, there was bad weather.
The United States Coast Guard said on Friday that it had concluded its two-day, 325-mile search alongside the Royal Bahamas Defense Force.
Their Coast Guard command center and aircrews based in Miami have supported RBDF rescue operations since the initial report on Wednesday evening and have continued through Friday evening, said Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas, in a statement on Friday.
They were informed this evening by the RBDF that they were suspending active search attempts pending further developments and would not be requesting additional Coast Guard assistance after informing the Robbins family.
They extend their deepest sympathies to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends.
Robbins was a brilliant baseball player who attended the school for almost a decade and made an indelible mark on his classmates and professors.
Lab School director Kevin George told a local news source that Robbins is a “special kid.”
He’s been here his entire educational career. He’s a tremendous athlete with a wonderful child, a great grin, and a beautiful head of hair. It’s just one of those kids one is so proud of when they walk across the stage, George said.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said it is looking into allegations that Robbins jumped into the ocean on a dare.
The school has hosted many prayer vigils in the past several days, and counselors are being made accessible to students and faculty.
