According to police, the son of a former Boston Red Sox player murdered his 8-year-old son before committing suicide last week.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, George Scott III, the son of famous Red Sox first baseman George “Boomer” Scott, and his infant son Dante Hazard were discovered dead at their house last Friday morning. The family resided in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which is roughly an hour south of Boston.
Scott III, 54, “killed the boy with a sharp object before taking his own life,” according to district attorney spokeswoman Gregg Miliote.
Police were called to the family’s house on Friday to do a welfare check after a relative was unable to contact Scott III, 54, causing anxiety.
Miliote said that police conducted a search warrant at the residence two and a half weeks ago, searching for information in regard to the disappearance of the boy’s mother, who went missing in 2019 at the age of 28.
Mr. Scott is an individual of interest in the disappearance of Ms. Hazard, and that investigation continues to be active at this time, Miliote said.
On Friday, the revelation surprised the neighbors.
“I was not expecting this,” neighbor Courtney Columbo stated. “I just feel bad for the boy, he didn’t deserve any of that.”
Scott III “seemed like a nice guy” to Columbo, 34, based on their limited contacts. “I never really knew if he lived there or not because you wouldn’t see him all the time,” the neighbor claimed.
John Reis, another neighbor, said that the news was merely awful.
“How can you take an 8-year-old’s life?” wondered the 71-year-old neighbor.
Scott III has previously played in the Red Sox’s minor league system. His father, Scott Sr., is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. He was a three-time All-Star and an eight-time Gold Glove winner throughout his career in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a member of the Red Sox from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1977 to 1979.
