Psychologist Has Urged Parents To Stop Kissing Their Children On The Lips.

A psychologist has urged parents to avoid the celebrity habit of kissing their kids on the lips, saying that it might impair their development.

Charlotte Reznick is a licensed educational psychologist, author, and former UCLA assistant clinical professor of psychology.

She has already spoken out against the long-running trend of famous parents uploading images of themselves kissing their kids on the lips.

The Beckhams, Jamie Oliver, and Gino D’Acampo have all responded to trolls after being seen kissing their children on the lips.

Hilary Duff sparked outrage on the internet in 2016 when she posted a picture of herself kissing her son Luca on the lips.

While the picture received over a quarter-million likes, there were also scores of comments stating that a mother should not kiss her kid on the lips.

“You should not kiss your son like that,” one user commented. There are other ways to express affection, but not this one. It’s confusing for him, and it’s not good for him.”

The fad triggered an intense discussion regarding the ramifications of this gesture, even if done with good intentions.

“If mommy kisses Daddy on the mouth and vice versa, what does that mean when I, a little girl or boy, kiss my parents on the mouth?” Reznick told in 2015.

It’s worth noting that not all psychologists agree with Reznick, with Australian clinical psychologist Heather Irvine-Rundle calling her remarks “ridiculous” to parents.

However, there is also the concern of bacterial transmission.

One dentist recommended parents avoid kissing their kids on the lips until their baby teeth had matured, since this might harm their pearly whites.

“Baby teeth have a different type of enamel and dentine than adult teeth,” revealed Dr. Richard Marques of Wimpole Street Dental in London to The Independent.

In addition to transmitting colds and other illnesses via saliva transfer, it may cause the decay of infant teeth and impact the soft tissues and gums before the baby teeth have matured, according to Dr Marques.

He said that while adults may be able to manage the microbes in their mouths, kids with weaker immune systems are more prone to severe infections.

Meanwhile, social etiquette expert Liz Brewer says that although she doesn’t believe kissing children on the lips is a good idea, it’s eventually up to the parents.

When Victoria Beckham was seen kissing her daughter Harper in 2016, Brewer said, “With children, I wouldn’t have thought it’s a particularly good habit to get into, but it’s her child, and she’s at liberty to do what she thinks is best.”
