Twins, 4, died after toy chest lid closed on them while they were sleeping.

A Florida family is grieving the loss of their 4-year-old twins, who tragically passed away after being discovered inside a toy chest in their home.

On August 25, authorities responded to an incident at a residence in Jacksonville, where they found the two children in an unresponsive state, according to a statement from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Despite efforts to revive them, the children were declared deceased.

While the investigation is still in its early stages, law enforcement indicated that both kids had been playing inside the house and were later found unresponsive. The cause of death is yet to be determined, and authorities have not filed any charges as of the latest update.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the mother, Sadie Myers, revealed that the tragic incident occurred after the children had been put to bed by their father, who subsequently retired to bed himself. She explained that upon returning home from work a few hours later, she checked on her children, as was her usual routine, to ensure they were asleep. Afterward, she had her dinner and went to sleep herself.

Sometime during the early morning hours, the twins woke each other up and chose to play in their room instead of going back to sleep, a common occurrence, according to Myers. This time, they ended up falling asleep inside their cedar toy chest, which was typically used to store their stuffed animals.

Myers elaborated that during their sleep, one of the children likely moved or kicked, inadvertently closing the lid of the wooden cedar chest. She also noted a surprising detail: many wooden toy chests, once sealed, become airtight and soundproof. Thus, as the twins slumbered, they gradually ran out of oxygen.

The next morning, Myers assumed the twins were still sleeping while her other two older children were playing outside. When she eventually found them, she realized something was amiss, but it was already too late.

A family member, Deanna Myers, launched a GoFundMe page to support the grieving family, acknowledging that the parents couldn’t have foreseen this tragedy. She described the incident as an unimaginably painful experience for any parent or sibling.

As of the latest update, the GoFundMe page has raised over $16,000 to aid the family.

In her Facebook post, Sadie Myers expressed her determination to live for her two older sons and protect their mental well-being. She also issued a heartfelt warning to other parents, urging them to eliminate similar toy chests from their homes and requesting prayers and support from the community.
