The five ladies had just left a Minneapolis shopping mall after an evening of shopping and getting henna for a friend’s Saturday wedding when an SUV driver sped through a red light and crashed into their vehicle at 95 mph.
Sabiriin Ali, 17, Sagal Hersi, and Siham Adam, all 19, and Sahra Gesaade and Salma Abdikadir, both 20, were confirmed dead at the scene Friday.
In an interview, Khalid Omar, the director of Bloomington’s Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, where the ladies were members, called the women “pearls of the community — and the brightness of our future.”
The terrible deaths of the ladies have impacted the Muslim community deeply. Omar informed a local news station that the mosque had just celebrated Ali’s high school graduation.
Adam, Gesaade, and Abdikadir were all college students, and Abdikadir also taught at the center on weekends. It is claimed that some of the ladies had talked with their parents only 15 minutes before the tragedy.
A state trooper saw the speeding SUV at 10:15 p.m. Friday but was unable to stop the driver before the fatal accident, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. According to Adam Kennedy, a spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department, the driver has not yet been discharged from the hospital.
According to Jamal Osman, Ward 6 Minneapolis City Council Member, traffic camera footage of the fatal incident surfaced online this weekend after law enforcement shared the video.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara termed the leak “concerning.”
The women’s funeral is set for today. By Monday morning, more than $350,000 had been raised in the women’s names.
Losing anyone, that’s a tragedy, Omar expressed. However, losing five young individuals at the same time is extremely difficult to comprehend.
Authorities anticipate filing charges against the driver, whose identity they have not yet revealed, later this week.
