A Texas high school student tragically passed away shortly after completing a cross country race earlier this month. Angel Hernandez, a sophomore at Fort Worth’s Chisholm Trail High School, had just achieved his personal best time during a 5K race at a district track meet on October 13. Tragically, he collapsed suddenly at the finish line. According to KHOU, concerned friends assisted Hernandez to a nearby water station, and he collapsed again before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away about an hour later. The exact cause of his collapse and death remains under investigation by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Hernandez was honored as Athlete of the Week at his high school a week after his sudden death. His coach, Joseph Gifford, paid tribute to him, emphasizing his hard work, dedication, and the impact he had as a teammate. A funeral was held for Hernandez, and his school held a moment of silence in his memory during their annual homecoming football game.
In addition to his achievements in cross country, Hernandez was also a student and competitor at the Texas School of Karate, which canceled classes for a week following his passing. His karate coach, Ashley Wood, remembered him fondly for his infectious personality and smile, describing the profound impact he had on everyone around him. She also created a GoFundMe fundraiser to support Hernandez’s family in covering his funeral expenses, noting that his influence extended well beyond martial arts and athletics.
Friends of Hernandez, reflecting on the incident at the district track meet, shared their deep emotional connection with him. Alejandro Bailey, a fellow cross country runner, expressed their hope for his recovery and the sense of unity and family within the team. Madison Meers, a senior at CTHS and a close friend of Hernandez, recalled how he always brought joy to those around him, irrespective of their circumstances. She emphasized his capacity to love and uplift others and noted that he passed away while doing what he loved, hoping that he is now at peace and happy.
