For the second time in 100 years, a wolverine has been seen in California.

A unique visitor has arrived in California!

In May, a wolverine was observed in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. The last wild wolverine observed in California was found over a decade ago, according to a press release from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Experts kept an eye on the previous wolverine, which they found in Tahoe National Forest in February 2008, for ten years after its discovery. But considering the species’ usual lifespan of roughly 12 years, this current discovery is unlikely to be the same wolverine as the one seen in 2008.

Prior to these two sightings, the most recent evidence of a wolverine in California dated back to the 1920s, according to the department.

Since only two wolverines have been confirmed in California in the last 100 years, said Daniel Gammons, a senior environmental scientist at the department, in a press statement.

Many people in various locations shot films and images of the new wolverine. The wild animal was seen three times in the Inyo National Forest and once in Yosemite National Park, according to the announcement.

Although not proven, the various May sightings are most likely the same wolverine, according to the announcement, since the creature travels long distances.

In partnership with the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service, the agency hopes to gather genetic samples from the wolverine’s feeding areas to ensure that the recent sightings are all of the same animal.

While wolverines are infrequently seen in California, they are most abundant in Canada and Alaska, “with smaller populations in the Rocky and Cascade mountains.” According to the statement, the animal is completely protected as a vulnerable species under the California Endangered Species Act.

Wolverines, the biggest land-dwelling animal in the weasel family, resemble tiny bears. Sightings of California wolverines may be reported to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife through its Wildlife Incident Reporting System.
