Mellow is a much-loved neighbor who will be sorely missed.
Mellow’s hometown of Dupont, Pennsylvania, recently rallied behind the dog after learning he had cancer and wouldn’t survive until June.
Many neighbors learned of the tragic news via fliers labeled “Mellow’s Last Walk Around Dupont,” which were distributed by Mellow’s owner, Kevin. Kevin sent fliers into the mailboxes of many individuals in the neighborhood regarding his dog’s condition and something special he wished to do for the dog before it died.
“My name is Mellow, and I have been living in Dupont since September 2019 with my owner Kevin,” the message began, which included many images of Mellow.
“You may have noticed us walking in the neighborhood twice a day, every day — rain, snow, or shine. Some neighbors may have pet me or given me treats before, while others I may only know through their own dogs that say hello to me as we pass by. Regardless of how well we know each other, you have made my life so much richer than any rescue dog could have hoped for. I am grateful to have such caring neighbors and live in a community that looks out for one another so well,” the letter said.
Mellow and Kevin ended the letter by saying Mellow will most likely be “leaving for doggie heaven in June” due to his disease and that he wished to go on one more stroll with the neighborhood before that occurs.
To fulfill Mellow’s desire, Kevin organized a community farewell walk on June 3 to enable the dog to “say goodbye face-to-face.” Kevin’s letters to his neighbors contained information about the walk as well as a map of Kevin and Mellow’s intended route.
KJ Warunek does not reside in Mellow’s local region, but she learned about the pet’s last stroll via the Dupont community page she manages.
She manages the town’s community page, and a member sent a photo of Mellow’s letter to his neighbors for approval before posting it. When she read it, she was in tears and told her husband Mark, ‘We need to go see him on his final walk,’ Warunek recounts.
Warunek attended the ceremony on June 3 and found it moving how many people turned out to show their love and support for the dog.
She says that at least 20 people stood on every corner of his walk to say their goodbyes. It was incredible to see their community come together over a dog.
The kids in town were overjoyed to see this dog. Some even made signs saying ‘We Love Mellow,’ she continues.
Mellow seems to appreciate the additional attention and care as well. Warunek claims the dog’s tail wagged the whole way.
Mellow is the sweetest little boy. He was kind to all and soaked up all the attention. He realized that was his day! Warunek adds that despite meeting Mellow and Kevin for the first time on June 3, she felt a strong connection to them.
As an individual who lost a dog to lymphoma and understands how fast and nasty it is, they’re glad he’s still getting around, she says.
Mellow’s tenderness and the care shown to him by his neighborhood inspired Warunek to post images from the dog’s final stroll with the Facebook group Dogspotting Society. The post drew over 9,000 comments and helped disseminate Mellow’s story throughout the country.

It’s really remarkable how one animal can unite the entire world. She is still stunned! Warunek describes the reaction.
